Like the 1973 and 1969 Petite Champagne, this Cognac Millésimé comes from a family of notaries settled in Cognac for several generations.
This 1970 Petite Champagne was part of the estate of the father, who had bequeathed his stocks to his wife and son, a notary like himself. *
The father had purchased this lot from one of his clients, a major distillery in the Châteauneuf area.
The 1970 harvest was incredible in terms of volume and as such is sometimes referred to as the first "modern" harvest obtained at Cognac.
It was referred to, at the time, as the "harvest of the century". History has shown that since then, there have been many other "harvests of the century"!
On the nose, rising straight and direct, one immediately perceives that this is a racy Cognac.
Second nose notes are spicy (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg), with hints of leather and orange peel. These notes become more intense with aeration.
On the palate, a clean, powerful attack. Oily texture. Aromas of prune, walnut, English Christmas (Christmas pudding).
In the finish, straightforward yet gentle power, slight acidity. Cognac quite oaky, but the wood is well digested.
