Leclerc Briant

Created in Cumières in 1872 by Lucien Leclerc, Domaine moved to Epernay in 1955 to its current premises on Chemin de la Chaude Ruelle. At the same time, under the leadership of Bertrand Leclerc, great-grandson of the founder, and his wife Jacqueline Briant, Domaine became Maison de Négoce, and took the name Leclerc Briant. In 1980, Pascal Leclerc succeeded his parents and continued their work.

In 2012, the purchase of Leclerc Briant by Mark Nunnelly and Denise Dupré rescued the Maison from oblivion. This American couple, passionate about French art de vivre, fell in love with this non-conformist Maison. They joined forces with Frédéric Zeimett, a native of Champagne, who has since steered the House ever upwards of the Champagne codes, in the service of expressing a unique style now internationally recognized.

Description Leclerc Briant Château d'Avize 2012.

The Château d'Avize is one of the (too many) Rares Châteaux with a single vineyard in Champagne. It consists of a sober building with no walls or keep, surrounded by its 2.13 hectares of Chardonnay vines, located as its name suggests at Avize, Grand Cru from Côte des blancs. Maison Leclerc Briant is not the owner, but its team biodynamically manages this parcel and makes the wines.

This Blanc de blancs 2012 is also the first realization of this cuvée. 2012 ... what a complicated year!!! It began with a long, cold winter, followed by a cool spring with little sunshine. Then came hail and heavy thunderstorms until the end of July. It was the sunshine and warmth of August that saved the harvest, too small in quantity to be sure, but of exceptional Rare quality. 2012 ranks among the best vintages of all time.

The wines are aged for the most part (80%) in oak barrels, in order to patinate their fruity character and give them their vanilla and spicy aromas, the result of micro-oxygenation. In order to maintain this balance, Réserver, after disgorging, will receive only a low dosage (2g/L).

This cuvée is presented in a beautiful luminous pale yellow color with golden reflections. The nose is both fruity and pastry-like. Bitter lemon, ginger, green apple and quince, combined with verbena, lime blossom and white flowers, bring freshness and elegance. Notes of toasted hazelnut, coconut, caramel, puff pastry, apple pie and honey are simply bewitching. The palate is luscious and underpinned by chalky minerality, with fantastic tension to finish long on sea spray.

This Château d'Avize 2012 will sublimate a semi-cooked duck foie gras or tasty pan-fried red mullet fillets with fleur de sel.
