Leclerc Briant

Created in Cumières in 1872 by Lucien Leclerc, Domaine moved to Epernay in 1955 to its current premises on Chemin de la Chaude Ruelle. At the same time, under the leadership of Bertrand Leclerc, great-grandson of the founder, and his wife Jacqueline Briant, Domaine became Maison de Négoce, and took the name Leclerc Briant. In 1980, Pascal Leclerc succeeded his parents and continued their work.

In 2012, the purchase of Leclerc Briant by Mark Nunnelly and Denise Dupré rescued the Maison from oblivion. This American couple, passionate about French art de vivre, fell in love with this non-conformist Maison. They joined forces with Frédéric Zeimett, a native of Champagne, who has since steered the House ever upwards of the Champagne codes, in the service of expressing a unique style now internationally recognized.

Description Leclerc Briant Grand Blanc 2015.

The house of Leclerc Briant is not only a pioneer in organic viticulture, but also in parcel selection. This Grand Blanc is made exclusively from Chardonnay vines on classified Grand Cru terroirs in Côte des blancs, including an old parcel that Leclerc Briant holds at Cramant.

The year 2015 offered us a hot, Sec summer that caused water stress, but fortunately some welcome rain in August kick-started ripening progress. Pinot Noir suffered less than Chardonnay, which was much more heterogeneous, ranging from vegetal when harvested too early to heavy when harvested too late. The high minerality of the Côte des blancs terroir enabled us to produce a very high-quality harvest.

The wines are vinified and aged for 10 months in barrels that contained Château d'Yquem and Château Haut Brion blanc. They are disgorged after a long ageing period of at least 5 years. This Champagne, with no dosage and no sulfur, lets the Chardonnay express itself to the full, with its fruity juice and saline mineral framework.

La robe of this Champagne is luminous, a golden color with pale green highlights. The nose is rich and gourmand, on warm butter (brioche, warm croissant...), meringue and milk caramel, but also pear and pistachio, just lifted by a hint of lemon verbena and wild mint. The palate is clean and fresh with a strong, chalky minerality, and finishes on a delicious, persistent saline streak.

This Grand Blanc 2015 from Maison Leclerc Briant will be the ideal companion to a medallion of monkfish in walnut crust, risotto and porcini mushrooms.
