Philipponnat

For 5 centuries now, the Philipponnat family has been making its mark on the land of Champagne. The House Philipponnat was founded in 1522 on the lands of Aÿ, where all generations have succeeded one another. Possessing a unique historical and viticultural heritage, it reigns today over a vineyard of 20 hectares classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.

The House Philipponnat produces exceptional vintages that express the richness of their terroir, shining with elegance and purity.

What is the history of Maison Philipponnat?

April de Philipponnat was a soldier in the army of François I, and was granted lands in Aÿ by the king as a reward for his exploits at the Battle of Marignan in 1515. The Philipponnats will thus devote themselves over the generations to the elaboration of Champagnes wines, and acquire at the beginning of the XXth century cellars dug in the XVIIIth century in Château of Mareuil, a village classified in Premier Cru. These cellars are still today an exceptional heritage.

In 1997, the House Philipponnat will be acquired by the group of Champagnes Lanson-BCC, but retains its family heritage. Charles Philipponnat is now its general manager.

What is the terroir of Maison Philipponnat?

House Philipponnat operates a 20-hectare vineyard classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay. The vines are worked with the greatest respect for the soil and the environment, in particular by the use of draught horses for the ploughing. The House Philipponnat... See more ...

Description Philipponnat Clos des Goisses LV 1994.

The Clos des Goisses from Maison Philipponnat is one of the legendary cuvées of Champagne.
It is the oldest clos in Champagne (21 clos are now officially recognized in Champagne); its name comes from the old Champagne "patois" where Gois/Goisse means a sloping hillside. Clos des Goisses extends over 5.3 hectares, with full southern exposure and a 45° slope. Clos wines are highly sought-after because, thanks to the reverberation of the walls that reflect the sun's heat, they offer exceptional ripening for the grapes. Clos des Goisses is also an exceptional parcel thanks to the presence of outcropping chalk, which gives the wines their characteristic minerality.

The climate in 1994 was unsettled. The winter was mild and rainy, but in mid-April morning frosts (-5°C) wreaked havoc (destroying 300 ha) and disrupted budburst. Spring ended with plenty of sunshine, and hot weather and thunderstorms at the end of June encouraged flowering and grape growth until July. The cool August and rainy September tempered this strong development just right, and the first 15 days of September, mild and Sec, ensured a quality harvest; after careful sorting, the 1994 vintage even turned out to be a very great one, with clean, straightforward wines.

This cuvée is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from Mareuil sur Aÿ, Premier Cru. They are partially vinified in barrels (62%) to bring a touch of complexity, and without malolactic fermentation to preserve natural freshness. The initials LV stand for "Long Vieillissement", meaning that the cuvée is aged for 25 years in the cellar before disgorging and, after a light dosage of 4.5 g/L, rests for 9 months on laths. Only 933 bottles were disgorged on July 2, 2019, out of the 3665 produced in July 1995.

The remarkable finesse and precision of the Chardonnay blends perfectly with the intensity and complexity of the Pinot Noir. The fine effervescence illuminates its golden color. The nose is intense, offering smoky notes of coffee, porcini and sourdough. Then more subtle notes of meadowsweet, preserved lemon, ginger and tarragon emerge. The palate is full-bodied, round and charming, even intoxicating with its notes of stone fruit, cocoa and cherries in brandy. The finish is razor-sharp and multi-layered, with exceptional length.

This magnificent 1994 Clos des Goisses LV will easily rise to the iodine challenge of Beluga caviar, but also the delicate flavor of steamed lobster and clams, or for a more earthy cuisine, a turkey sauté with Champagne, truffle cream and porcini mushrooms.
