Louis Roederer

The House Louis Roederer is one of the names that comes up when we talk about the great houses of Champagne, being still one of the Rares to remain family owned for more than two centuries now.

Reigning over a vineyard of 240 hectares classified on sumptuous terroirs in Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, the House Louis Roederer has never ceased to offer generous Champagnes that embellish all occasions.

The House of Roederer: a family heritage

It was in 1833 that Louis Roederer inherited his uncle's house: the house of Champagne Dubois Père et Fils in Reims, which he had founded in 1776. From then on, he chose to take the habits and customs of the region in hand and showed great concern for controlling all the stages of production of his Champagne. At the time, marketing was the business of the wine merchants, while the vineyard belonged entirely to the winegrowers. Thus, in 1845, Louis Roederer bought about fifteen hectares of vineyards classified as Grand Cru and acquired the status of winemaker-negociant in order to reconcile the two trades.

In 1876, Louis Roederer II, who succeeded his father following his death in 1870, created at the request of Tsar Alexander II a special vintage for the exclusive consumption of the Tsars of... See more ...

Description Louis Roederer Cristal 1989 Magnum.

Cristal, the house's emblematic cuvée Louis Roederer, is made from the finest grapes from 7 Grands Crus of their Domaine. Composed of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, Cristal Roederer also includes 20% of wines vinified in oak foudres.

This vin de garde is exclusively cellared in exceptional years, with a minimum of 6 years' aging.

Part of its Secret lies in its liqueur de tirage, a precious nectar added directly to Champagne bottles during maturation to induce foaming. This liqueur, exclusive to Roederer Champagnes, comes from the finest wines of the house's vineyards, deliberately forgotten in oak barrels for four to ten years. Tasted on their own, these nectars could rival the greatest Bourgogne white wines.

The bottle is a replica of the old crystal flask reserved for Tsar Alexander II in 1876.

The golden colour and gentle, slow, regular effervescence create an atmosphere that is perfect for tasting. The first aromas to emerge are those of youth, with notes of lemon and fresh white flowers. Next, vanilla and fig emerge, followed by hints of caramel and white chocolate. Finally, toasty, full-bodied notes of almond and frangipane unfold for a firm, lively finish of infinite elegance. It's truly delicious.

This 1989 vintage of Cristal will sublimate oven-grilled lobster tails with an old Pineau des Charentes sauce... or simply, homemade sushi and sashimi or prepared by an authentic Japanese caterer (and not a trendy chain restaurant!).
