The Maison R&L Legras, a family heritage

Although the origins of the Maison R&L Legras date back to the 16th century, it is from 1808 that its history takes a turn under the impetus of Honoré Legras, who sets out to develop one of the most beautiful vineyards of the Chouilly on the Côte des blancs commune.

Two centuries and six generations have now passed, and today the vineyard of Maison R&L Legras reaches a size of 5 hectares planted in Chardonnay and classified exclusively in Grand Cru. The soils are composed of chalk and limestone, conferring freshness and minerality to the vines that flourish there.

The Champagne R&L Legras are elaborated with a permanent concern for precision and regularity, where tradition rubs shoulders with modernity, but they benefit above all from a constant attention thanks to a passion that is unfailing.

What are the most emblematic cuvées of Maison R&L Legras?

The Brut Blanc de blancs Grand Cru reflects the identity of the house: it combines elegance and freshness, with an aromatic dominance of citrus and white-fleshed fruits. Neither more nor less than a Champagne of pleasure, ideal for aperitif and raw fish dishes.

How can we not evoke the cuvée Hommage Grand Cru, which first aged 10 years in the cellar before doing honor on a table. A noble, intense and complex Champagne, with seductive aromas of yellow fruits, flowers and roasting that will allow it to accompany distinguished dishes. 

The Evanescence cuvée is a Champagne Blanc de blancs of great class, offering greedy brioche and roasted notes, as well as Secs and white-fleshed fruits. It will be ideal for a gourmet aperitif but can be equally well paired with gourmet dishes.

The Cuvée Saint Vincent from Maison RL Legras represents a Blanc de blancs made exclusively from grapes from old vines located at Chouilly, Grand Cru of the Côte des blancs. These low-yielding vines produce deep, complex wines. This cuvée was created in 1964 as a tribute to Saint Vincent, the patron saint of winegrowers. It has only been produced 12 times, in exceptional years.

The year 2012 was particularly difficult. It began with a long, cold winter, followed by a cool spring with little sunshine. Episodes of hail and intense thunderstorms persisted until the end of July. Fortunately, the sunshine and warmth of August saved the harvest. Although quantity was low, quality proved Rare exceptional. The 2012 vintage is thus ranked among the best of all time.

This Champagne has a sparkling color and abundant foam composed of fine bubbles, a characteristic unique to the Maison. On the nose, it begins with remarkable intensity and power. This is followed by generous, gourmet notes of butter and warm brioche. On the palate, nuances of candied fruit and flambéed pineapple provide a warm sensation, balanced by the freshness of the great Chardonnay of Chouilly. The finish is light and of great finesse, offering gustatory pleasure from start to finish.

The cuvée Saint Vincent 2012 pairs perfectly with a grilled sea bass accompanied by vegetables or even a simple pan-fried clams.
