De Sousa

La Maison De Sousa is located in the commune of Avize in the heart of the prestigious Côte des blancs. It was founded by Antoine De Sousa in the 1950s through marriage to a daughter from a winegrowing family.

Today, Erick De Sousa is one of the region's most talented winemakers, favoring a sustainable approach to his vineyards in order to produce authentic Champagnes of great purity.

What is the history of Maison De Sousa?

In the aftermath of the First World War, Manuel De Sousa, originally from the province of Braga and part of the Portuguese contingent sent to the front, decided to settle in Champagne at Avize with his wife. His son Antoine married Zoémie Bonville, from a long-established family of winegrowers in the region. A success story that has never ceased to endure. Their son Erick took over in 1986, demonstrating exceptional talent in raising the vineyard to a new level of excellence Rare. Today, he is gradually passing on his heritage and passion to his three children: Charlotte, Julie and Valentin, who will continue to write the pages of history.

What is the terroir of Maison De Sousa?

House De Sousa watches over a vineyard of 9.5 hectares of vines classified as Grand Cru in the commune of Avize on the Côte des blancs. Situated between the high-quality terroirs of Cramant to the north and Oger to the south, Avize has a soil and subsoil... See more ...

Description De Sousa Cuvée des Caudalies 2012 Avize : Les Pierre Vaudons.

"A caudalie is a unit of measurement that expresses the duration of expression in the mouth of the wine's aromas, it is calculated at the moment the wine is swallowed. One caudalie equals one Seconde."

This cuvée highlights the terroir of Avize on the wonderful 2012 harvest. By selecting a vintage from a single terroir and a single plot, the De Sousa family wanted to highlight its character, its unique feature as well as its strength.

The first approach to the nose reveals rich impressions of Secs fruit cookies, almond/hazelnut cookies. Aromas Secondaires reveal more root-like elements: green anise, fennel, mingled with a damp, coppery stony trajectory. After oxygenation, notes of syrupy, liquor-like essences appear, such as Limoncello and acacia syrup. The fragrances gradually take on a new hue, and the wine travels through the seasons to autumn and its mushrooms, cigar and blond tobacco.

The mouthfeel is oiled, again distinguishing hazelnut fat, a very fine, defined saline abyss. In successive layers of this abrupt, powdery and very pronounced inner energy are illustrated at the end support: blond caramel, autumnal woodiness, dried leaves then forest brown mushrooms. Great bitters magnify the finish.

A complex, rich Champagne that would be desirable to sublimate with exceptional dishes such as smoked salmon and avocado millefeuille or grilled lobster with herbs.

The Caudalie vintage has an aging potential of 15 to 20 years.
