Olivier Leflaive

It was Olivier's grandfather, Joseph Leflaive, who, in the aftermath of World War 1 and the bankruptcy of his Saint-Etienne steelworks, initiated the expansion of Domaine, his investments in Bourgogne being all he had left.

Domaine becomes a 35-hectare family business. His son Joseph Régis, an insurer, and his brother Vincent took over in 1953.

The house quickly acquired its titles of nobility, thanks in particular to the arrival in the 1970s of air conditioning in Puligny, a considerable advance for this village built two meters above the water table, which had no underground cellars.

Description Olivier Leflaive Meursault Premier Cru "Sous le Dos d'Âne" 2020.

The name of this 5-hectare biodynamically farmed parcel may lead to a smile. In fact, it evokes a rise in the ground at the end of the Bois de Blagny. With the reflection of the light, the stones Extraites of the vines of this Secteur can make you think of a donkey's back... The sloping terroir rests on a rather fat, marly and stony soil giving the wine a mineral-flinty appearance.

A wine with La robe golden color with a hint of green. On the nose, opulent honeyed notes mingle with buttery nuances and white stone fruit, all in balance and finesse, without ever falling into the pitfall of heaviness. The 15 months of barrel ageing give this wine discreet notes of spices and Secs fruits, as well as a very distinguished and elegant woodiness (only 25% new barrels).

Rounded and voluminous on the palate, in which the acid balance plays its role to perfection: tension and vivacity lend freshness to this ripe and concentrated material. Very good length on the palate, with balance and finesse.

A very great Meursault, fine and mineral, very representative of the chalky terroir of the "Sous le dos d'Ane" climate. Magnificent at the table with fish or grilled gambas, very good with foie gras (for a lighter, more balanced match than with a liquoreux: it's the roundness of this rich Chardonnay wine, not the sugar, that coats the fat of the liver). Wait a few years for this magnificent wine to reveal its full potential.
