This is a Domaine located in Bourgogne, steeped in History and so prestigious the world over. As far back as 312, the rhetorician Eumenes mentions this terroir whose wines were in great demand by Roman and Gallo-Roman connoisseurs.
It was in 1769 that Domaine La Romanée was purchased by the Prince de Conti, a Prince of the blood since he was the cousin of the King of France, Louis XV. The Domaine was sold as "national property" during the French Revolution, and it was not until the Restoration, under the reign of King Louis XVIII, that the Conti name was added to Romanée to form its current name: La Romanée-Conti.
La Romanée-Conti DRC currently comprises 8 Grands Crus exclusively: Corton, Echezeaux, Grand-Echézeaux, La Tâche, Montrachet, Richebourg, Romanée-Conti and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, all ranked at the very top of the quality hierarchy of Bourgogne wines. The vineyards cover just over 25 hectares, with an annual production of 80,000 bottles. Pinot Noir is planted throughout, except in the Montrachet vineyard, which is planted with Chardonnay.
All grapes are harvested by hand, with successive and very meticulous sorting of the berries, either in the vineyard or in the cellar, and the wines from the different climats (a name typically used by the Bourgogne to designate a room however small) are aged in French oak barrels.
The harvest is so prestigious that it is bought 2 or even 3 years in advance by buyers from all over the world.
