Château La Gaffelière

Château La Gaffelière

A very fine wine that reflects the very best produced on Rive droite de Bordeaux, here's Château La Gaffelière. Nestled between the Pavie and Ausone hills south of the village of Saint-Emilion, the first traces of this Domaine vineyard date back to Roman antiquity, as evidenced by remains discovered in 1969.

It takes its name from "Gaffets", a term used to describe lepers in the Middle Ages, when Saint-Emilion was home to a leper colony. At that time, most of them carried a stick, the "gaffe", which they used to beg and move around.

For over three centuries now, the estate has been governed by the de Malet-Roquefort family, who continue to develop the terroir with passion and energy, vintage after vintage.

The Château La Gaffelière was named Premier Grand Cru Classé as soon as the Saint-Emilion classification was created in 1955. Thanks to the high reputation of its wines, it will retain this distinction up to and including the 2021 vintage. At the beginning of 2022, Domaine will opt to withdraw from the classification, the next edition of which was due to be made official in September of the same year. Thus, from the 2022 vintage, the label of Château La Gaffelière will mention only the Saint-Emilion appellation Grand Cru.

Description Château La Gaffelière 2015.

The 2015 vintage was a wonderful year in Bordeaux, where a dry, warm spring allowed the vines to ensure a rapid flowering. The summer that followed brought together hot and dry conditions. A few rains in August were however beneficial for the vine, providing adequate water resources. September and October were cool, sunny and without rain, ensuring a complete maturation of the grape varieties and offering a serene harvest.

Blend of the 2015 vintage : 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet franc

The robe is a beautiful purple color, with brilliant garnet and tile highlights.

The nose is particularly expressive, with aromas of very ripe forest fruits, toasted wood, licorice and Sichuan pepper.

Soft at the attack, it evolves in roundness and complexity, carried by tannins of a brilliant finesse. It is particularly greedy, with flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant cream and raspberry, mixed with cocoa. It has a great freshness and a long lasting finish, which is persistent and racy.

Food and wine pairing:

Château La Gaffelière 2015 can accompany many meat dishes: a beef steak with foie gras and porcini mushrooms, a veal grenadin with morel sauce, a famous roast chicken or a duck breast with wine sauce and shallots.

The cheeses to choose from are those that are pressed uncooked: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire or Salers.

For dessert, it will be particularly exquisite on a pear-chocolate tart, a tiramisu or a crispy chocolate dessert.

Ageing potential and tasting:

Château La Gaffelière 2015 will reach its peak between 2032 and 2035. However, it can be enjoyed now, by opening and if possible decanting the bottle 4 to 5 hours before tasting, in a room at room temperature.

Do not hesitate to proceed to successive tastings to measure the evolution of the wine and its qualitative peak.

The bottles should be kept in the cellar in a dark place, lying down, with an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
