Château Léoville Las Cases

A great name in Bordeaux vineyards, no longer in need of introduction, rightly dubbed the "Premier des Seconds crus". A very old Médoc property, Domaine was seized during the French Revolution, then divided into three Léoville estates between 1826 and 1840: Barton and Poyferré and Las Cases, the original Domaine of Marquis Pierre-Jean Las Cases.

During the 1855 classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition, Château Léoville Las Cases was crowned Second Grand Cru Classé, and became the property of the Delon family at the end of the century. Today, Jean-Hubert Delon is in charge of its management.

The vineyard of Domaine covers some 60 hectares, 55 of which are fully enclosed within the famous Las Cases enclosure, on a high-quality terroir facing the Gironde estuary. The soils are composed of gravel and the subsoils are gravelly-sandy, containing a proportion of clay. The grape varieties are 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 30 years. The wines are aged for 18 months in 50% new barrels.

Since 2007, Domaine has produced a Second wine, Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases.

The wines of Léoville Las Cases have left their mark on the wine world, asserting themselves as complex, refined and profound, aging with elegance.

Description Château Léoville Las Cases 2012.

The 2012 vintage was mainly characterized by a hot and very dry summer, which followed a cool and very wet spring. From August onwards, the weather conditions stabilized and allowed the grapes to follow a good maturation process. The harvest, carried out in a serene way, is very selective so that only the most qualitative grapes are kept.

Blend of the 2012 vintage: 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc

The robe is a magnificent dark red color, with beautiful tiled reflections.

The nose is very expressive and particularly aromatic, with notes of stewed black fruits, blackberry and black currant, black olive, truffle, Sichuan pepper and Zan.

It shows a very nice entry in mouth, the wine evolves on a dense and voluminous texture. The tannic structure is finely built, the black fruit and licorice flavors sublimate its juicy flesh. It ends on a long, precise and persistent finish.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Léoville Las Cases 2012 can be enjoyed with a châteaubriand with truffle sauce, veal grenadin with morel sauce, venison jig with grand veneur sauce or roast pigeon.

For an agreement with cheeses, privilege those with uncooked pressed paste: Cantal, Edam, aged mimolette, morbier with truffle or Saint-Nectaire.

For desserts, enjoy it with a grand cru chocolate tartlet, an Opéra cake or a black forest.

Cellaring potential and tasting:

Château Léoville Las Cases 2012 can wait another 10-15 years in the cellar, reaching its peak between 2032 and 2035.

It is however ready to be tasted today. To do so, take care to place and open the bottle in the serving room at room temperature the night before. If this is not possible, open and decant the bottle at least 5 to 6 hours before tasting.

The bottles should be kept in the cellar, protected from light, lying down, at an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
