Château Rauzan-Gassies

A safe bet for the Margaux appellation, Château Rauzan-Gassies has its history dating back to the 17th century. The Bordeaux merchant Pierre Desmures acquired the house of Gassies in 1661, which was split into two more than a century later: the Château Rauzan on the one hand and the Château Rauzan-Gassies on the other.

During the famous 1855 classification for the Paris World's Fair, Domaine obtained the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé. Seduced by its terroir, Paul Quié became its owner in 1946. Today it is his grandchildren, Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe Quié, who perpetuate the tradition of this great Domaine.

The vineyard, planted on 30 hectares of deep gravel soils as well as sandy-gravel soils, is composed of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 55% of which are new.

The Domaine produces a Second wine, Gassies, vinified with the same care as its elder.

The wines of Rauzan-Gassies are typical of Margaux, elegant, fine and complex, predestined for long aging.

Description Château Rauzan-Gassies 2018.

Counting among the most successful Bordeaux vintages of recent years, 2018 can be divided into two climatic phases: a mild and rainy spring, and a magnificent hot and dry summer which was very favorable to the good development of the vine cycle. The harvest at Château Rauzan-Gassies went smoothly, with the ripening of the different grape varieties being perfectly completed thanks to a very fine late season in September and October.

Blend of the 2018 vintage: 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot.

The robe is a very deep dark red color, with purple highlights.

The nose expresses a fruity bouquet, with black cherry, black currant and raspberry, then takes a roasted turn with notes of cardamom, cedar and pepper.

Delicate on the attack, it evolves on a silky texture supported by finely chiseled tannins that give it freshness and elegance. Fruity, fleshy and carried by a nice acidity, it stretches for a long time until a charming, long and racy finish. A particularly seductive Margaux.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Rauzan-Gassies 2018 will sublimate a tournedos of beef Rossini, a hind leg with morels, a lamb mouse confit with garlic or a duck breast with pepper sauce.

For a pairing with cheese, choose uncooked pressed cheeses: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire, morbier, Tomme de Savoie or Salers.

For dessert, it will be delicious with a praline dessert, an Opera cake or a raspberry-chocolate tart.

Ageing potential and tasting:

Château Rauzan-Gassies 2018 has great aging potential, deserving to wait another 10 years to refine itself. Its peak will be reached between 2032 and 2035.

However, it is quite ready to be enjoyed now. To do so, take care to place the bottle the night before in the serving room at room temperature. Open it and decant it ideally 3 to 4 hours before tasting.

The bottles should be kept in the cellar, protected from light, lying down, at an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
