Château Pichon Baron

Château Pichon Baron

One of the most beautiful Châteaux of the Médoc, with its slender turrets reflected in a mirror of water, producing a great wine in its image. Such is the Château Pichon Baron on the edge of the Pauillac appellation.

It was in 1694 that Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, first president of the Parliament of Bordeaux, gave his name to this vineyard of great reputation, which he acquired by marriage with the heiress of the De Rauzan family. He took care before his death to separate Domaine into two parts: one would become Château Pichon Baron and go to his two sons, and while the other would become Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse, intended for his three daughters.

The Château Pichon Baron will obtain the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification established for the Paris World's Fair.

Today it stands on a sumptuous terroir of quaternary gravels that face the Gironde estuary. With a surface area of 73 hectares, it is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 80% of which are new.

The Domaine has been producing a Second wine since 1983, the Tourelles de Longueville, and another since 2012, the Griffons de Pichon Baron.

The wines of Château Pichon Baron embody the purest expression of Pauillac, harmoniously combining finesse and elegance, as well as purity and depth.

Description Château Pichon Baron 2008.

A vintage synonymous with effort and patience, 2008 was marked in the Bordeaux vineyard by a series of contrasting climatic events. At Château Pichon Baron, the technical teams anticipated all these episodes in order to guide the evolution of the vines and improve their conditions. In September, a beautiful Indian summer covered the entire harvest period, creating a serene climate and producing fruit of very good maturity.

Blend of the 2008 vintage: 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot.

The robe is a deep dark color with a subtle garnet glow.

The nose is complex and seductive, revealing notes of black cherry, wild berries and menthol, complemented by dark chocolate, spices and coffee.

The attack is frank, revealing a fleshy and demonstrative wine carried by enveloping tannins and a delicious acidity. With freshness and refinement, it rises to a crescendo, offering exquisite tertiary flavors of cardamom and truffle. It has a long, lingering finish, a magnificent Pauillac wine that is still young and vibrant.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Pichon Baron 2008 will go well with a Corrèze veal knuckle with Bresse butter, a rack of lamb in a herb crust, a roast duck in a sesame crust, a hare à la royale or simply a Tomahawk rib of beef.

To pair with cheese, choose uncooked pressed cheeses: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire, morbier, Tomme de Savoie or Salers.

For dessert, it will be particularly delicious with a dark chocolate mi-cuit, an Opéra cake or Yann Couvreur's Caribbean dessert.

Ageing potential and tasting:

Château Pichon Baron 2008 can still benefit from its great ageing potential and wait between 2026 and 2030 in the cellar to refine further.

But it is quite ready to be tasted and enjoyed today if properly prepared. To do so, take care to open and decant the bottle ideally 3 to 4 hours before tasting, and to serve it between 15 and 18°C.

The bottles should be kept in a dark cellar, lying down, with an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
