Jacques Boyd, the King's squire, bought some land in the parish of Cantenac in 1754, thus creating and expanding a wine-growing estate which gave birth to two properties: Boyd-Cantenac and Cantenac Brown. Indeed, a French of Scottish origin, John Lewis Brown bought part of the Cantenac vines which took the name of Cantenac-Brown. He built a Tudor-style castle there.

Cantenac-Brown is a third Grand Cru Classé according to the prestigious 1855 list.

The vineyard, which covers 42 hectares, is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon for 65%; 30% in Merlot noir and Cabernet franc 5%. The age of the vines is on average 35 years.

The annual production is 120 barrels, ie 140 to 150,000 bottles depending on the vintages.

All the harvest is manual and the wine is aged in new barrels for half of the harvest and the other in one-year barrels.
