Petrus

Petrus, a myth among myths, no more, no less. The most famous cru of Bordeaux, born of an exceptional terroir combined with a unique and jealously guarded savoir-faire. In the 19th century, Domaine was founded by the Arnaud family, naming it after the first of the Popes.

In 1925, Edmonde Loubat acquired shares in Domaine, spotting its great potential. For 20 years, she promoted the wines, and in 1945 joined forces with Jean-Pierre Moueix, originally from Corrèze and head of his own trading house in Libourne.

Together, they relentlessly developed the reputation of Petrus, sharing the firm conviction that it would become the equal of the great Châteaux of Rive gauche. The wine became particularly popular in the United States, with Kennedy becoming its first ambassador. On the death of Edmonde Loubat in 1961, Jean-Pierre Moueix became sole owner and called on oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet to take charge of vinification. Over the following decades, Petrus rose to the top of the hierarchy of great Bordeaux wines.

Today, Jean-Pierre Moueix's sons and grandsons, Jean-François and Jean, are at the helm of Domaine, accompanied by Olivier Berrouet who has replaced his father in the cellar and continues to give birth to the Petrus style.

Today, Petrus reigns over an 11.5-hectare vineyard, planted on a 40-metre-high... See more ...

Description Petrus 1971.

The 1971 vintage got off to a very bad start at Bordeaux with a very wet spring, favoring mildew and coulure. Almost all the work on the vines, usually carried out by tractor, had to be done by hand, as the soils were so wet and impassable. Once these difficulties had been overcome and the flowering had taken place, the months of July and August unfolded in excellent conditions. An abundance of sunshine loaded the grapes with sugar and concentrated tannins and aromas.

Of all the Bordeaux region, it's the Rive droite appellations, including Pomerol, that really stand out with their highly concentrated wines. And the best wine of the vintage, all appellations combined, is without a shadow of a doubt Pétrus! Proof of this is the comment by the famous American critic Robert Parker: "Pétrus 1971 must surely be the wine of the vintage." Or that of Jancis Robinson MW a few years ago: "I think this wine could go on and on. Certainly the best 1971 known..."

This living legend sports a dark garnet color with amber highlights. Its incredible bouquet evokes mocha, cherry, cedar, licorice and the truffle so characteristic of great evolved Pomerols, all with enormous sensuality.

The light tannins melted by the decades that have passed give it a very tender attack on the palate and plenty of mellowness. Slight smoky and chocolate notes emerge on the finish. Wonderful balance between alcohol and acidity.

This Pétrus of great purity is one of the most delicious and seductive you can find. An authentic monument that still has life, a silky, tasty and irresistible sap. Try it with dishes that evoke the aromas of undergrowth, such as capon stuffed with porcini mushrooms, veal with chanterelle mushrooms or fillet of beef with fresh truffles. Otherwise, Petrus 1971 will stand on its own and can be enjoyed as a meditation wine...
