Château Lafon-Rochet

It is impossible to miss the yellow color of Château Lafon-Rochet which borders the Saint-Estèphe appellation. It is a vineyard which will be born in the XVIIth century, and it is Etienne de Lafon, adviser to the parliament of Bordeaux, who will give him his name. He received it by marriage with Antoinette de Guillemotes, then owner of Domaine de Rochet. The Lafons will keep more than two centuries Lafon-Rochet, including after the French Revolution.

The Château Lafon-Rochet will be named Fourth Grand Cru Classé in 1855 at the time of the famous classification of wines of Bordeaux for the Paris World Fair.

It was owned by the Tesseron family for 60 years, with Basile Tersseron being the third and last generation. The Domaine passes at the end of 2021 into the hands of Jacky Lorenzetti, founder of the Foncia group.

The vineyard, located on dry and deep gravel soils as well as clayey gravel, today reaches an area of 39 hectares of vines, planted with 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. The wines are aged for 15 months in oak barrels, 45% of which are new wood.

A Second wine is produced by the property, the Pilgrims of Lafon-Rochet.

The wines of Château Lafon-Rochet are a reference of the Great Wines of Saint-Estèphe, silky, ample and elegantly constructed.

Description Château Lafon-Rochet 2014.

2014 was a beautiful wine year in Bordeaux, marked by contrasting weather conditions. The flowering of the vines was homogeneous thanks to a sunny spring, then the summer alternated between a beautiful July and a cooler August. September and October were very nice and had warm and sunny days, offering berries of a very good quality.

Blend of the 2014 vintage: 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot.

The robe is a pronounced dark red, adorned with subtle tiled garnet reflections.

The nose combines finesse and freshness, with expressive notes of black fruits, wild berries and menthol, supported by cardamom and toasted vanilla.

The attack is supple, revealing a fleshy and complex body supported by a nice acidity and ripe tannins. Tasty notes of ripe fruit, coffee and pepper are harmoniously blended, which continue to a creamy, long and beautifully fine finish.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Lafon Rochet 2014 can accompany a pork filet mignon with port, roast beef with morel sauce, boar leg confit, duck breast with pepper or even a slab of doe with a mushroom crumble.

For a pairing with cheese, choose uncooked pressed cheeses: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire, morbier, Tomme de Savoie or Salers.

For dessert, enjoy it with a coffee tart, a tiramisu or a three chocolate dessert.

Cellaring potential and tasting:

Château Lafon Rochet 2014 would deserve to wait another 5 years in the cellar, in order to improve and refine its potential.

However, it is quite ready to be enjoyed now. To do so, take care to place the bottle the night before in the serving room at room temperature. Open it and decant it ideally 3 to 4 hours before tasting.

The bottles should be kept in the cellar, protected from light, lying down, at an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
