The Château Haut-Bages Libéral enjoys a prime geographical position, situated on the banks of the Garonne on the Bages plateau to the south of the Pauillac appellation. The estate has long been administered by the Libéral family since the early 18th century, and has long produced wines renowned for their quality thanks to its large terroir, which it shares with prestigious neighbors such as Château Latour or Château Pichon Baron.
Le Château Haut-Bages Libéral was named Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition.
The Lurton family acquired it in 1982, with Claire Villars-Lurton at the helm since 1992. Starting in 2007, she began converting the estate to biodynamic, agroecological and agroforestry practices. Today, Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a benchmark in this field in the Bordeaux vineyard, being certified organic since 2019 and in the process of converting to biodynamics.
Château Haut-Bages Libéral is based on a 30-hectare vineyard planted on clay-limestone and deep gravel soils. The grape varieties are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The wines are aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, of which the proportion of new wood is around 40%.
The estate produces a Second wine, La Chapelle de Haut-Bages Libéral, as well as since 2020 a natural organic cuvée with no added sulfur named Ceres, from plots of Merlot managed in agroecology and agroforestry.
The Château Haut-Bages Libéral produces expressive, powerful and refined wines, where passion and respect for the environment are reflected with the purity of fruity aromas.
