Château La Dominique

It's impossible to miss this winery with its pretty red facade at Château La Dominique, right in the middle of the Saint-Emilion winegrowing landscape and on the edge of the Pomerol appellation. A wine estate since the 16th century, its name is said to have been chosen by Henri Greloud, its 18th-century owner, in reference to the Caribbean island of La Dominique, which was part of the triangular trade and contributed to the wealth of Bordeaux.

Acquired in 1969 by the Clément Group Fayat, the vineyard has undergone continuous improvements over the years.

A turning point in its progress was notably its technical complex created by architect Jean Nouvel and inaugurated in 2014. It includes both winemaking spaces and a rooftop reception point with the restaurant "la terrasse rouge". The latter offers a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding vineyards.

The Château La Dominique was named Grand Cru Classé as soon as the Saint-Emilion classification was created in 1955, so renowned was it even then for the consistency and quality of its wines. It has maintained this position ever since.

Neighboring prestigious Châteaux such as Cheval Blanc, La Conseillante or l'Evangile, Château La Dominique boasts a 29-hectare vineyard planted on clay-gravel, clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils. The grape varieties are 89% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

Description Château La Dominique 2014.

The 2014 vintage produced a very nice wine for Chateau La Dominique on the right bank of Bordeaux. After a homogeneous flowering of the vines in May, the summer saw alternating phases of heat and coolness. September and October, on the other hand, will be very beautiful and warm, marked by a dry period accompanied by a north wind that will concentrate the berries in tannins, aromas and color.

Blend of the 2014 vintage: 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet franc.

The robe reveals a lovely dark red color, tinged with subtle garnet highlights.

The nose is particularly pleasant and balanced, offering beautiful notes of ripe black fruit, raspberry and peppery spices, as well as a touch of wood and licorice.

The attack is precise and juicy, the wine is sensual and fruity with flavors of cherry and black currant. Its very fine tannic structure and its lively acidity give it a lot of freshness and persistence. It ends on a long silky and persistent finish.

Food and wine pairing:

Château La Dominique 2014 could accompany spit-roasted pigeon, wood-fired beef tagliata, Angus beef with Chimichurri sauce, veal grenadin with morel sauce, or roasted venison noisette.

For a pairing with cheese, choose uncooked pressed cheeses: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire, morbier or Salers.

For dessert, enjoy it with a tiramisu, an Opéra cake or a Dôme praliné.

Cellaring potential and tasting:

Château La Dominique 2014 can still benefit from its aging potential in order to mature, and can be enjoyed until 2030.

But it is perfectly suitable for tasting now, taking care to open and decant the bottle ideally 3 to 4 hours before tasting, at a room temperature of between 15 and 18°C.

The bottles will be kept in the cellar, protected from light, lying down, at an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
