It is impossible to evoke the great and most charming wines of Pessac-Léognan without mentioning Château Latour-Martillac. The Château owes its name to the tower that stands in its main courtyard, a vestige of a fortress built in Martillac in the 12th century by the ancestors of the philosopher and winegrower Montesquieu. The Domaine was acquired in 1871 by Edouard Kressmann, a Bordeaux merchant.
Grand Cru Classé in red and white in the 1953 Graves classification, today it is the brothers Tristan and Loïc Kressmann who are at the helm, continuing the family tradition of always favoring quality over yield on this authentic terroir.
The Château Latour-Martillac extends over a 55-hectare vineyard implanted on an exceptional Pyrenean gravel hilltop.
- The red grape varieties are 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The ageing of the great wine lasts from 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new. Lagrave-Martillac is the Second red wine.
- The grape variety in white is 60% Sauvignon blanc and 40% Semillon. The great white wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new wood. Lagrave-Martillac is the Second white wine.
The wines of Château Latour-Martillac are particularly elegant, offering a sumptuous structure, a lot of harmony and aromatics in both red and white.
La robe has a deep purple color. On the nose, the wine boasts a seductive, complex aromatic bouquet. We detect notes of ripe red fruit (strawberry, raspberry) combined with hints of cloves, licorice and vanilla. The palate is powerful and full-bodied, with firm, well-integrated tannins. The structure is supported by well-balanced acidity that carries us through to the savory, aromatic finish. A superb wine that still requires a little cellaring to fully blossom.
