Château Rauzan-Ségla

The Château Rauzan-Ségla reflects the richness and elegance of the finest Margaux wines. It was in 1661 that Pierre Desmures, a Bordeaux merchant, acquired the house of Gassies, which was split into two more than a century later: Château Rauzan-Gassies on the one hand and Château Rauzan on the other.

The latter became Rauzan-Ségla under the aegis of Baron Pierre-Louis de Ségla's daughter. The wine of Domaine seduced Thomas Jefferson in 1787, future president of the United States and ambassador to Paris. So much so that he ordered several cases for himself and on behalf of George Washington.

The Château Rauzan-Ségla was named Second Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition. Owned by Chanel since 1994, the 70-hectare vineyard is planted on priceless terroir. The soils are composed of deep, fine clay gravel, planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The Domaine produces a Second wine, Ségla, which expresses itself nicely but with less depth than its elder brother.

Born of precision and passion in both vineyard and cellar, the wines of Château Rauzan-Ségla have great finesse and structure, allowing the purity of the fruit to shine through throughout their length.
