Château Beychevelle enjoys an exceptional geographical position on the edge of the Gironde river, which it dominates by a few meters and whose gardens extend down to the river.

This strategic position would have allowed according to legend to the owners of the place, the Dukes of Epernon, to force the boats which went up the river to unload their precious cargoes to have to pay a grant, a sort of toll right before the letter. The ships then had to lower their sail. Beychevelle takes its name and its emblem, a ship with a griffin bow, from the old Gascon name Bêcha Vêla which means "Drop sail" and will later become Beychevelle.

The first stones of the castle were laid in 1565 but the vineyard had existed since long before since the Beychevelle wines in the Middle Ages left the port at the foot of the Castle. In the 18th century, it belonged to the President of the Parliament of Bordeaux.

The area of ​​the property is 250 hectares including 93 hectares in vines, the rest in meadows and woods.

The soil is composed of gravel with a clay-gravelly subsoil thus partially retaining water during summer for optimal maturation. In addition, the proximity of the river plays a protective and climate regulating role while influencing the light, a third key element.

The grape variety is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon 52%, Merlot noir 40%, Cabernet franc 5% and Petit Verdot 3% and the average age of the vineyard is 30 years.

The harvest is manual by successive sorting and the annual production on average is of the order of 550 to 560 barrels, or 650 to 700,000 bottles per year.

The wine is aged entirely in barrels, 50% of which are new oak barrels before the Printemps bottling.
