Château Léoville Poyferré

Château Léoville Poyferré

Synonymous with aromatic finesse and elegance, Château Léoville Poyferré lies to the north of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. It was created in 1840 following the various divisions of Domaine de Léoville, and became the property of Baron de Poyferré, who added his name to it.

It was crowned Second Grand Cru Classé in the prestigious 1855 classification. The Cuvelier family, wine merchants, acquired it in 1920. For 40 years, Didier Cuvelier has led the restructuring of the vineyard, respecting the environment and the terroir. His cousin Sara Lecompte Cuvelier took over the reins in 2018.

The vineyard covers 58 hectares of vines, planted with 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet franc. The wines are aged entirely in oak barrels, 80% of which are new, over a period of 18 to 20 months.

Le Pavillon de Poyferré, Second wine of Domaine, is made mainly from Merlot.

The Château Léoville Poyferré is a sublime wine, offering plenty of power and body without losing its subtlety.

Description Château Léoville Poyferré 2005.

2005 is a great vintage for the Bordeaux vineyard. All the climatic conditions were favourable to give birth to a great vintage: a season marked by constant sunshine without excessive heat, and an alternation of hot days and cool nights in August and September which allowed the berries to obtain a magnificent quality.

Blend of the 2005 vintage: 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot.

The color is a beautiful intense red tile with brilliant reflections.

The nose is of a beautiful aromatic intensity, offering a bouquet of very ripe black fruits, melted wood, peppery spices and clove, with a touch of leather and blond tobacco.

The attack is frank, giving way to a full and warm matter. It rises crescendo in aromatic power, carried by fine and elegant tannins, and releasing notes of cooked fruits and licorice. It finishes with a long mineral and acidic finish. A great Saint-Julien wonderfully evolved.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Léoville Poyferré 2005 will go very well with a brioche beef fillet, a shoulder of lamb confit with honey, a duck breast sautéed with green pepper, a shoulder of wild boar roasted in cider as well as with all types of small game, such as hare.

For an agreement with cheeses, taste it with Cantal, Edam, aged mimolette, morbier with truffle or Saint-Nectaire.

For desserts, it will be particularly delicious with an Opera cake, a pear-chocolate entremet or Cyril Lignac's famous chocolate moelleux.

Ageing potential and tasting:

Château Léoville Poyferré 2005 can still wait for almost 10 years in the cellar, and its peak will be reached between 2025 and 2030.

It is however ready to be tasted now. To do so, place the bottle in the serving room at room temperature the night before. Open it at least 6 to 7 hours before tasting, with decanting possible after 1 hour of opening.

The bottles will be kept in the cellar protected from the light, lying down, with an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
