Château Lagrange

A magnificent property in the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Lagrange now occupies an almost intimate place in the hearts of wine enthusiasts. Although its history dates back to the 17th century, it wasn't until 1796 that Château Lagrange underwent tremendous expansion under the impetus of its owner Jean-Valère Cabarrus, the finance minister of Napoléon I in Spain.

The Château Lagrange will obtain the rank of Third Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition.

The Japanese Suntory group will acquire the Domaine in 1983, and spectacular technical renovations will be undertaken in the winery and vineyard to restore Lagrange's reputation.

Situated on two gravelly hilltops, the vineyard of Château Lagrange covers 118 hectares of vines, of which 68% are Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The estate produces a Second wine, Fiefs de Lagrange, as well as a third wine in Haut-Médoc, Pagus de Lagrange.

The vineyard also boasts 11 hectares of white grape varieties for the production of their white wine Sec, les Arums de Lagrange, of which 80% is Sauvignon blanc, 10% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon gris.

The wines of Château Lagrange are renowned for their elegance and complexity, where the finesse of the tannins envelop a fully fruity palate.

Description Château Lagrange 2022.

The vines’ impressive resilience on the property’s gravelly terroirs was not even pushed to its limit by the unique weather conditions of 2022!

Once again, Château Lagrange have proof that the vine plants possess the necessary resources to face challenging, sometimes extreme, weather conditions.

The cool, refreshing nights had a buffer effect on the extraordinarily high daytime temperatures in this the hottest ever vintage on record in Bordeaux.

The grapes were quite unique, small, concentrated and ripe with a disconcerting acidity.

The fact is that Bordeaux has probably produced the greatest vintage of the last fifty years.

The Merlots are magnificent, but it is the Cabernet Sauvignons that dominate, coming in at a new estate record of 86 % in the blend.

They combine density, freshness and length: the signature of the very top Médoc vintages.

We delight in the blackcurrant, morello cherry and liquorice notes.

The 12% of Merlots represents, on the contrary, a record low proportion at Lagrange.

The 2% of Petit Verdots completes the midpalate with pear and black pepper aromas.

A strict selection has been performed again this year, with only 40% of Château Lagrange grand vin in this exceptional vintage.

The unquestionable quality of this 2022 vintage is as high as the yield is low, we even harvested a little less than in 2021.

Everything is there in this wine, nothing out of place, like a perfectly round sphere, dense, velvety and vibrant, the ultimate harmony.
