Château Pichon Baron

Château Pichon Baron

One of the most beautiful Châteaux of the Médoc, with its slender turrets reflected in a mirror of water, producing a great wine in its image. Such is the Château Pichon Baron on the edge of the Pauillac appellation.

It was in 1694 that Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, first president of the Parliament of Bordeaux, gave his name to this vineyard of great reputation, which he acquired by marriage with the heiress of the De Rauzan family. He took care before his death to separate Domaine into two parts: one would become Château Pichon Baron and go to his two sons, and while the other would become Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse, intended for his three daughters.

The Château Pichon Baron will obtain the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification established for the Paris World's Fair.

Today it stands on a sumptuous terroir of quaternary gravels that face the Gironde estuary. With a surface area of 73 hectares, it is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 80% of which are new.

The Domaine has been producing a Second wine since 1983, the Tourelles de Longueville, and another since 2012, the Griffons de Pichon Baron.

The wines of Château Pichon Baron embody the purest expression of Pauillac, harmoniously combining finesse and elegance, as well as purity and depth.

Description Château Pichon Baron 2022.

A cold and dry winter, followed by a warm spring: a fairly early bud break.

At the beginning of April: a severe episode of frost, but with limited consequences.

May: flowering and fruit set took place in very good weather conditions.

June: high temperatures allowed the grapes to develop rapidly, with a first heat wave in mid-June, followed by a rainy spell beneficial for the vines.

A sunny summer, with generally high temperatures and rain-free heatwaves.

These conditions caused water constraints in the vines, however qualitative for the grapes, which gave a very promising tannic and anthocyanin richness.

Mid-August was rainy and cool, which boosted photosynthetic activity.
