Château Lascombes

Château Lascombes

It's hard to resist the charm of Château Lascombes, nestled in the heart of the Margaux appellation. It was named by its owner, Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes, in 1625.

Since then, several generations of Lascombes have succeeded one another, each contributing to the property's reputation.

The Château Lascombes was thus crowned Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, during the famous official classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition. Having belonged to a French mutual insurance company since 2011, Château passed into the hands of the American Lawrence family in November 2022. Owners of a Domaine in Napa Valley, their aim is to continue the quest for perfection for this iconic Médoc cru.

The vineyard is located on clay gravel and clay-limestone soils, and reaches a size of 130 hectares of vines including 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months for the grand vin and 16 months for the Second vin, Chevalier de Lascombes, in oak barrels, of which 70-80% is new wood for the grand vin.

The Château Lascombes produces concentrated wines imbued with elegance, balance and undeniable pleasure.

Description Château Lascombes 2022.

Wine review by professional critic J. Leve "The Wine Cellar Insider rated 92-94/100

"Deep in color, the wine is lush, concentrated, polished, full-bodied, and packed with toasty oak, black currants, blackberries, black cherries, espresso and cocoa.

This is incredibly creamy, but it is also quite oaky, so it is not for the oak averse.

If you let it age it a bit, the oak could become better integrated into the wine. Drink from 2027-2050".

Wine review by professional critic J. Anson rated 93/100

"All eyes on Lascombes as of the 2023 vintage with the arrival of Axel Heniz, making this 2022 a particulary interesting vintage for future comparisons.

You'll find a ton of black cherries, cassis, fragrant baked spices, bitter chocolate and fennel, with serious tannic grip and fresh acidities.

Marked by the vintage, as you would expect from a vineyard that has plots in different soil types across Margaux, but it walks the line and there is plenty of lush fruit and personality to enjoy here. 60% new oak.

The biggest change this year is the increase in Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, which was possibly by bringing the percentage of 1st wine down to 40%, 3.75, 36hl/h yield.

New owners the Lawrence family with CEO Carlton McCoy involved in the blend, but not the growing season.

The wine cellar was redone for 2021".
