The Pomerol appellation is unique in the Bordeaux vineyard, and is without a doubt one of the most prestigious. Located on the Rive droite of Bordeaux near the city of Libourne, it covers an area of nearly 770 hectares of vines, corresponding to an average production of 31,000 hectoliters of red wine. These vines are spread over terraces of clay and sandy gravel, with iron oxides in the subsoil which are the recognizable mark of this terroir.

The appellation Pomerol is known worldwide for its iconic wines, but has no official classification for its Grands Crus.

What are the characteristics of the Pomerol appellation?

The appellation Pomerol benefits from an oceanic climate with continental nuances, and rests on clayey and sandy gravel soils, which on the one hand reflect the light towards the foliage of the vines, but which also ensure a natural drainage of the soils. The iron oxides provide the vines with numerous minerals that give the wines their unique personality.

On these soils, the Merlot grape variety blossoms in the overwhelming majority, as well as the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

  • The Merlot will bring roundness, elegance and suppleness to the wines, while giving them subtle aromas of red fruits and spices.
  • The Cabernet Franc is used in conjunction with the Merlot in the blends, providing a fine and well-built tannic structure as well as a nice aromatic freshness.
  • The Cabernet Sauvignon will also bring tannins and reinforce the ageing potential.

The wines of Pomerol are powerful, deep and supple, renowned for combining the finesse of Bourgognes with the richness of Bordeauxs. Approachable in their youth, with notes of red fruits, spices and violets, they deserve to wait several years to become more complex, offering notes of licorice and truffle.

What are the emblematic properties of the appellation Pomerol?

Although the appellation Pomerol does not officially have any Grands Crus, its wines are no less famous and appreciated for their high quality.

We can mention: Vieux Château Certan, Château La Conseillante, Château l'Evangile, Château Lafleur and of course, the most famous of all, having allowed the name Pomerol to be known throughout the world: Petrus.
