Alsace

Alsace Grand Cru: The Grand Cru designation appeared in Alsace as soon as the 9th century. Thus the best terroirs are born from the winegrowers’ expertise, who disclosed, with time, remarkable soils, benefiting from unique micro-climates. Today, only 51 terroirs delineated on a minimal surface area of 800 hectares (total surface area of Alsace wines being 15.000 hectares) according to strict geologic and climatic criteria, forming a mosaic of Alsace Grands Crus that are a flagship of Alsatian production. They represent the top of the pyramid of Alsatian wines, the best terroirs with the most beneficial climate on impressive clay-limestone soil. Grands Crus wines produced there represent 4% of the overall Alsace vineyard production. Grand Cru’s yield per hectare is restricted to 55 hectolitres whereas other Crus can produce up to 80 hectolitres. Grape harvest is necessarily manual. Grand Cru wines are outstanding and gain from aging, becoming wonderful after 5 to 10 years, regardless of grape variety. For all these reasons, Premiers Grands Crus selected these rare exceptional wines.
