Along both sides of the Loire river, from Nantes to Sancerre, there are more than 85 wines of different appellation but only one of those has the exclusive Grand Cru appellation: Coteaux du Layon - Quarts de Chaume. The vineyard covers about fifty hectares only, planted exclusively with Chenin grapes. The history of these exceptional wines is dating back to the Middle Ages. At this time, the vinegrowers had to pay a quarter of their Coteaux du Layon crop to the Abbess of Angers Ronceray. The grapes are today harvested by hand in October by successive picking. The yield must not exceed 25 hectoliters per hectare. This is a sumptuous sweet white wine, which quality is considerably increasing in bottles and can be kept more than fifty years in your cellars. Premiers Grands Crus chose these wines as being confident to bring you the greatest wines of this so renowned tiny appellation. Premiers Grands Crus recommend them as an appetizer with toast of foie gras or blue cheese or during a desert of pears, almonds or poached peaches.
