The ‘Sauternes’ controlled designation of origin can only be claimed for vines harvested in the towns of Sauternes, Fargues, Bommes, Preignac and Barsac.

The overall surface area of the Sauternes vineyard amounts to 2400 hectares of which 1800 hectares of white wine. The grape varieties are Two thirds of Sémillon, a little less than a third of Sauvignon, and slight traces of Muscadelle.

These wines are characterized by an aged gold colour, a smoothness, a roundness. Their aromas express themselves in a true symphony of citruses, acacia, and even apricot. They are very syrupy, rich in glycerol and other sweet bodies. The most outstanding of them are ganerously glass-coating.

It is essential to forget these wines in cellar, since they are going to acquire smoothness, pureness and body like no other with time, which does not prevent them from being drank young.

There are currently 26 classified Crus in 1855 : a superior Premier Cru : Château d’Yquem, 9 Premiers Crus like Château Vigneau or Rieussec and 15 Deuxièmes Crus like Château Filhot or de Malle, to mention only those we have selected but all the others are just as great quality-wise.
